What goes into picking a Domain Name?

If you are in the market for a domain name you should not have any problems at all finding what you need. Of course, you may have a great idea in mind just to find out that it is already taken, but most of the time you will be able to find an alternate name that will work just as well.

Domain name registration can be completed through a number of different online services. It is a relatively easy process that should not take up too much of your time. The first thing you need to do is a domain name search. This can be done by visiting any number of sites that offer domain name registration. When you are performing a domain name search you are trying to find out which names are available and which ones have already been taken by somebody else.

After completing a domain name search and finding something that suits your needs you will be able to proceed forward with the domain name registration process. This consists of verifying that the name you want is correct, and then purchasing the domain name. A domain name transfer is then made, and you will then have your very own domain name. You can then find a company that can host your domain name, and proceed to get your new web site up and running.

Domain name hosting companies are also available all over the internet. There are hundreds of sites that will be able to host your newly purchased domain name. In fact, many domain name hosting sites also offer you the ability to run your domain name search through them as well. This will allow you to be able to go through with the domain name registration at the same site that will be hosting your new name. This allows for you to cut back on a lot of headaches because you will be completing everything under the same company. They will then be able to quickly get you up and running.

While running a domain name search be sure to keep in mind the message you will be trying to convey to your audience. Remember, this is the site that they will be visiting to purchase your products or services. You want to make sure that your domain name is appropriate for the type of site you will be running.

Also, when looking for a domain name hosting company be sure to do your research. Each company offers their own distinct advantages and disadvantages, and each company will offer a different level of service for a different cost.

Overall, domain name registration is not a very difficult task. In fact, it can be very enjoyable if you know exactly what you want.

How to Choose a Domain Name For Your Business?

Domain name provides access to information that you own or want to create for the public in the public domain. Therefore, there are a number of consideration in deciding and choosing the right name for your business as follows:-

1)if you are in the business of selling or buying property for and/or on behalf of clients then your domain name should reflect that. An example of a domain name for a business that sells real estate is www.acresofrealestate.com If you rely on the internet for your business, lead generation, promotion or for information then having a name which describes your business and what you do is very important it would seem. But, this is also a very contentious point... There are counter arguments and we shall take a brief look at some shortly.

2)If your offline business is called "Real Estate New York" then your internet business should in theory map that business exactly. Domains names such as:-

A) realestatenewyork.com
B) realestateny.com
C) justrealestatenewyork.com
D) totalrealestateny.com
E) 123realestatenewyork.com

The names listed above (A to E) are all suitable for your business. However, the best practice according to Nathan Anderson; the America's foremost search engine optimization expert, in choosing name for ones domain name is to have the business name in the front. For example, realestateny.com is preferred choice over say the 123realestatenewyork.com name for search engine optimisation stand point.

How do I then register my chosen domain name?

There are a myriad of domain name registration companies all over the world. How do you choose one? Since you are interested in good service, you want to choose a company that specialises in domain registration. You will be able to decipher good companies from that ones that are not so good. This is my experience with domain registration companies:-

" Cost is a major factor when you are registering a lot of domain names particularly when you have 100 or more domain names... I have therefore actively looked for companies that are the cheapest "

Recently, I bought 2 domain names at $2.99 each but the supplier turned out to be very poor at providing service. As a direct result, I went back to my original supplier and paid nearly $10 for each domain. The point of this exercise "cheap turned out to be very expensive".

What if my chosen domain name is already registered?

This is sometimes the case. There are lots of realtors in New York and chances are that someone has already beaten you to it. Under this situation, I will be inclined to use a domain name that matches my business as closely as possible. Realestateny4you is not a bad choice. Arguably, this name is too similar to say another business; a competitor, for all intents and purposes. According to H. Anderson. "it matters less what the name of your chosen domain is the real issue is about promotion of the name ". I agree with this statement whole heartedly because a site regardless of its name does nothing for the business until such time that the site is actually promoted and that is the key to there being any meaning or value in the name.

Starting A Home Based Internet Business - All You Should Know About Domain

When you first think of starting a home based internet business, the first you might think off is internet and then immediately after would be the name of the new business you are about to launch. The name of the business, and actually the first thing about starting a home based internet business is the name, or as it is appropriately known, "domain".

What is a domain? Domain is the name of your online business, and the very first thing you need to have when starting a home based internet business (and any other internet based business as a matter of fact). The domain will contain of three distinct parts, i.e. the first part which is www (or World Wide Web), followed by a dot. Then you will have your business name - let us say it is 'xyz' followed by another dot (or full stop) and lastly you will have com or org, au, ro, uk, etc. The last part will indicate what type or registration you have. If it is education, it will most likely be .edu, if it is Australia is can .au, .uk for UK, .ro for Romania and so on.

Your registration will determine in the end your full domain name. The registration can be directly by you over the net, or done through the web host. Both are genuine and trouble free, the charges for yearly registration seldom exceeding $100/-. Be careful however, when you do so, that you are named as the owner (registree) and not the web host.

When starting a home based internet business you will find it very useful to have sub-domains. In this way you can keep yourself organized your website free of clutter and have a separate address for each such sub-domain. The separate address would make it very easy to post links and link pages to
search engines for best SEO results.

In similar lines you could use multiple domains. The difference between multiple domains and sub-domains is that the former is used a direction provider (re-direct) and the other is a separate folder. Both services are free and both are invaluable when starting a home based internet business since one organizes and de-clutters and the other boosts search engines capacity to identify your website.

There are a number of web hosts who promote free web hosting. Never go for free web hosting when starting a home based internet business. You can have that for a hobby or personal website, but for business is a definite NO-NO. The main reason for avoiding free web hosting, besides the fact that it gives very limited services, is because if tomorrow they go bust, you will disappear with their addresses. I advise you to use good professional services both for designing your website, as well as for hosting it. You cannot afford cheapness creep in when starting a home based internet business - value for money - YES, but not cheapness.

The domain is the first and last thing that a surfer will remember about your website. Make sure you choose a easy and remember-able domain name - or you will risk oblivion. Also always have on your page a link prompting for book-marking. This can be priceless when starting a home based internet business and you want to build up traffic.

Getting Your Web Site Launched

To get your web site on the Internet, you need a domain name and a hosting company. The following information answers frequently-asked questions about domain name registration and hosting.

Choosing an effective domain name is important to attract potential buyers, increase visibility, convey a professional image, and inspire trust.

What is a domain name?
Having your own domain name is a must for a business web site. Your domain name or web address is a unique name, identifying a specific web site, for example, http://www.yourdomain.com.

You can register your domain name with .com or other extensions, including .net,.org,.info, and .us. Always register the .com name since most people are familiar with it. In addition, consider registering your domain name with.net to prevent competitors or speculators from registering a similar name.

Follow these tips when selecting a domain name
• Choose a descriptive domain name that conveys professionalism and is easy to remember and type.
• Consider a domain name that represents your business name, product name, or indicates your type of business.
• Consider variations of your domain name like making it plural, adding dashes, or underscores.
• Include relevant keywords in your domain name to boost your search-engine ranking.

More tips about domain names
• A domain name can include up to 67 characters, including the .com, .net, .org, .edu, or other extensions.
• Domains cannot contain spaces.
• Domain names are NOT case sensitive, so you can spell your domain in uppercase, lower case, or a combination of both, e.g. http://www.YourDomain.com or http://www.yourdomain.com.
• You can use numbers, letters, and hyphens (dashes) in your domain name, but the web address cannot start or end with a hyphen.
• Special characters such as ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) and ? are not permitted in web addresses.
• Avoid confusing characters like 0 (zero), l (one), 2, s, and z to minimize the risk of typos. The number zero (0) can be confused with the letter O, and the number "1" with the letter "l."
• If you register a domain containing hyphens, also register the same name without the hyphens, for example, www.your-domain-name.com and www.yourdomainname.com.

You can check the availability of a domain name at http://www.networksolutions.com
or any of the registrars listed by http://www.internic.com.

Registering a domain name
It's best to choose a hosting company first before registering your domain name. Have the hosting company register or transfer your domain name for you.

You can register your domain name yourself through domain name registration services, known as registrars. Internic provides a list of ICANN-accredited registrars (the organization governing domain names) at http://www.internic.com/regist.html. When submitting a registration or transfer, the registrar will ask for the name of two domain name servers that contain your IP address. Your host will give you that information. Once your domain name has been registered or transferred, it takes approximately 72 hours before it becomes active.

Fees for domain name registration
Each registrar sets its own price for registering domain names. The fees to register a domain name for one year range from $3 to $35 a year. It's a small price to pay to gain your prospects' trust. You can register a domain name for one or several years. At the end of the registration term, you must pay a renewal fee to keep your domain name. If you don't renew, someone else can take your domain name. Some registrars offer free or discounted registration services in connection with other offers, such as web hosting. Make sure they are reliable. Receiving a $10 discount is not worth the delays and hassles you may encounter. Ask your professional web designer for a referral.

Parking a domain name
If you want to reserve a domain name but don't have a hosting company yet, you may have to pay a fee to a hosting company or registration service to hold or "park" the name. Some registrars charge $40 and others offer parking for free. Make sure they are reliable.

Protect your business and product names by registering them as a domain name before someone else does, and renew the registration before it expires.

IMPORTANT TIP: When registering your domain name, make sure you are both the billing contact and administrative contact. If your hosting company lists itself as the billing contact, you won't have much leverage to keep your domain name if you decide to switch hosts.

Keep the Same Email When Changing Hosting
When changing hosting companies, you can keep the same domain name and email address connected to that domain name, e.g. www.webmaster@yourdomain.com. You simply transfer your domain name to a different hosting company.

How to Make Money Online Through Domaining

Domaining is an Internet-based business through which you buy, sell, develop and monetize (convert into money) Internet domain names. Domain names are web addresses and come in a variety of different extensions, the most common of which is .com. These domain name portfolios can include marketable, generic word names, or names with expired registrations that still have a decent amount of traffic.

Domainers
This term refers to individuals, companies and organizations that make it their business to collect portfolios of generic Internet domain names. Domainers typically avoid trademarked names and will not take part in typosquatting (leading a user who accidentally mistyped a website address to an alternate website). Domaining is considered by those who practice it to be in the same business vein as real estate investing. The business of domaining includes domain parking, domain name reselling, and domain name development. A strong combination of these elements will provide you with a higher income potential as you begin collecting revenue from each practice.

Domain Parking
Domainers generate revenue by using domain parking. This method takes type-in visitors to an underdeveloped website that has advertisement listings and links. Through the pay-per-click method, the domainer makes money based on the number of clicks each advertisement gets. The domainer determines whose ads will have links posted on the site through advertisers bidding for placement. Once the ads have been posted, each click on the link will earn the domainer income.

Domain Name Reselling

The business of domain name reselling involves providing registration of available domain names for business clients. Reselling may also include acquiring expired domains from a drop registrar for resale at a later date. A drop registrar takes domain names that have expired and have been deleted and registers them for use again.

Domain name auctions provide resellers with another way to buy and sell domains and can prove to be quite profitable if you have quality domain names that are in demand.

Domain Name Development
If you want to take things a step further and make even more money online with your domain name business, develop your domain names into fully functioning Web sites. That way, you will profit from the sites as well as through various web marketing techniques that increase traffic to each of them. Marketing techniques that are sure to drive Internet traffic to your sites include:

Live Current Media Sells Malaysia.com For $400,000?

Live Current Media Inc, a media company built around content and commerce destinations, today announced cost cutting measures including a reduction in staff and a domain name sale to the amount of $400,000 US.

The company announced that it has introduced various measures to decrease its monthly operating costs, including a 38% reduction in employees, cancellation of senior management annual bonuses for 2008 and Live Current CEO Geoff Hampson has voluntarily deferred one-third of his annual salary. Pay increases for all employees have also been suspended.

“We expect these cost saving initiatives to significantly reduce our cash burn in 2009,” said Live Current Chairman and CEO Geoff Hampson. “We will continue to seek opportunities to scale our cost structure to meet the challenging global economic times and to help us to achieve our goal of having our business units operate at a profit or, at the least, cash flow break even. We expect to continue to invest in people and processes that will improve the operational performance of our businesses.”

Additionally, Live Current announced the first of the previously announced sale of non-core domain names for gross proceeds of $500,000 CAD (around $400,000 US). Andrew Allemann of DomainNameWire speculates that it could be Malaysia.com as Malaysia.com is the only domain name whose whois info has changed since the domain sale was announced.

Live Current will continue to market several additional non-core domain names with the aim of generating enough working capital to meet its obligations through the end of 2009.

“The sale of our ancillary domain names makes a lot of sense as a non-dilutive form of financing, especially when the Company’s stock is trading well below the break up value of its assets,” states Hampson. “Our goal is to continue to invest in our perfume and cricket business units while ensuring we have adequate cash resources to see us through the next 12 months.”

You can learn more about Live Current Media on their website.
